Today we as a nation remember the tragic events which led to the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis Police on May 25, 2020. Following the murder of Mr. Floyd, the nation called on all members of law enforcement to examine how we as police conduct our business and undertake major reforms to protect the lives of those we serve.
While I believe much has been done in furtherance of this public outcry, there is still more work to be done in the areas of training, recruitment, and accountability. Today is not the day to list the steps and changes law enforcement has undertaken to better our profession, for they are just words. History will be the judge of our progress on our actions, not our words.
Today is a day to remember the Floyd family and their loss as we reaffirm our commitment to delivering our services with humanity and empathy for those in need.
