We are seeing a significant increase in reports of unemployment fraud which usually involve someone filing for unemployment benefits using your personal information. You may receive notice that someone has filed for unemployment in your name a few different ways, including receiving unrequested unemployment paperwork in the mail, you may receive an unemployment check or debit card that you did not apply for from the Pennsylvania Treasury, or your employer might notify you that a claim has been opened using your information after they were contacted to verify the unemployment claim. If this happens, you are encouraged to file a police report with your local police department. You should report the fraud to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry. Traditional unemployment fraud should be reported online at the UC Benefits website, https://benefits.uc.pa.gov/vosnet/Default.aspx, click “Report Fraud Here” at the bottom of the page to complete and submit the Identity Theft Form. If you are legitimately collecting unemployment benefits but your account has been hijacked or your money rerouted to someone else you should call the Fraud Hotline at (800) 692-7469.
If you receive a check or US Bank debit card in the mail that you did not request, you should return these items to Pennsylvania Treasury with a brief signed statement as to the reason for the return, as well as your phone number or email address.
