Due to the continued rising cost to fill up our tanks, thieves are resorting to stealing gasoline from parked vehicles. A few days ago, the Upper Moreland Police encouraged our residents to join the "9pm Routine" - assuring that the doors to your vehicles and house are secure, as well as turning on outside lights and security systems. Here are a few additional tips to add into that routine to keep thieves from targeting your vehicle to steal gas.
1. Park indoors if possible.
2. If parking indoors is not possible, park in a well lit area. Consider installing motion activated lights on your residence that cover the area where your vehicle is parked. This pertains to parking at businesses after dark as well. Park in a well lit area of the parking lot, preferably under a street light or close to the business.
3. Position your car so that the gas tank faces the roadway. Thieves have been known to access the gas tank by drilling holes under the car and letting the gas drain out. It is more likely the thieves will bypass a car that would leave them exposed to a passing motorist.
4. Consider investing in a locking gas cap.
