‘Battle of the Badges’ blood drive Jan. 31

Community members are invited to cast their vote for the Upper Providence Township Police or Fire Department by coming out to donate blood.

PHOENIXVILLE, PA, Jan. 13, 2023— Upper Providence Township Police and Fire departments will compete to see who can recruit the most eligible community blood donors during their inaugural American Red Cross “Battle of the Badges” blood drive.

The drive will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 31 from 1-6 p.m. at the Upper Providence Township building, 1286 Black Rock Road in Phoenixville. All those who come out to donate will receive a free T-shirt, while supplies last. Donors are asked to schedule an appointment prior to arriving at the drive. To schedule an appointment, visit RedCrossBlood.org and enter sponsor code BOB UP or call 1-800-REDCROSS.

Battle of the Badges is a friendly competition that helps the Red Cross meet patient and hospital demand for blood. When donors arrive at the blood drive, they will have the opportunity to cast a vote for the Upper Providence Township Police and Fire departments. The winning agency gets bragging rights and a plaque.

“Both of us have dedicated our lives to public safety, and we have seen firsthand the incredible work the red cross does in times of need.  We are both honored and excited to participate in the Battle of the Badges blood drive, and we encourage everyone to come out to support us. We look forward to seeing you on January 31, 2023.” - Chief Mike Risell and Chief Mark Freeman

Severe winter weather and cold and flu season often lead to a seasonal blood shortage. Blood donations are critically important to maintain a stable blood supply for patients.

In partnership with the National Football League (NFL), those who come to give blood, platelets or plasma Jan. 1-31, 2023, will be automatically entered to win a trip for two to Super Bowl LVII in Arizona*, including access to day-of, in-stadium pre-game activities, tickets to the official Super Bowl Experience, round-trip airfare to Phoenix, three-night hotel accommodations (Feb. 10-13, 2023), plus a $500 gift card for expenses.

How to donate blood

Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.
