Upper Gwynedd Police receives grant to fund Alcohol Awareness Programs

Earlier this year, Upper Gwynedd Police Department applied for a grant through the PA Liquor Control Board. Through its grant program, the PLCB funds programs focused on reducing underage and high-risk alcohol consumption and supports related law-enforcement activities. The Upper Gwynedd Township Police Department was excited to learn that we were selected to receive a $26,000 grant and we are grateful that we are able to get this project up and running in our community.

The Upper Gwynedd Police Alcohol Awareness Project will promote educational awareness to the dangers of underage drinking and dangerous drinking with alcohol. This project will be used at local schools and community events throughout Upper Gwynedd Township and the North Penn Area. An obstacle course will be set up with traffic cones and barriers which the rider must negotiate. The rider will pedal the Drunk Buster pedal kart through the course while wearing alcohol impairment goggles with different levels of impairment. We will have both adult and youth karts for this project.  This course will show the rider how alcohol affects one’s ability to control the kart while driving and being under the influence.

Officers will be trained by the PA Liquor Control Board Educational Specialist to provide up to date information about the effects of alcohol to the students and adults.  At project locations, a tent will be set up with field sobriety tests for balance, coordination, and undivided attention. Officers will lead participants through these tests while wearing impairment goggles and attempting to complete the tests.  These tests will be difficult to perform while wearing the impairment goggles, as they will simulate being under the influence of alcohol and promote awareness.

An educational trailer will transport these items and supplies to project locations. Once the project is up and running, educational material from the PLCB will be inside the trailer for students, young adults, and parents to access. Another very important aspect of this project is the interaction of the Upper Gwynedd Township Police and other area departments with its community members.  It is our hope to strengthen our partnership with students, young adults, and parents but to also educate about the dangers of underage drinking and the effects or consequences of dangerous drinking.
