On August 23, 2020 around 12:00 PM, Sgt. Raymond Royds and Officer Minjoo Kim were dispatched to the area of East Prospect Avenue in North Wales for a report of a suspicious person. The officers attempted to make contact with the subject, later identified as Randy Root, at which point he fled from police. The officers continued to search the area before receiving another call of a man fitting Root’s description on Marlyns Lane. Residents were reporting that he was roaming through yards, entering sheds and attempting to get into vehicles. Sgt. Royds arrived on scene and observed Root who fled from the scene. Sgt. Royds began a foot pursuit entering a rear yard on Cathys Lane. Root then ran towards Sgt. Royds, raised a black long gun and fired a single shot towards Sgt. Royds. Root fled the shooting scene. A perimeter was set up with numerous responding police departments. Officer Kim located the suspect in the yard across from the shooting location at which point they were able to take him into custody.
Root has been charged with Attempted Murder of the First Degree, Aggravated Assault, Assault of a Law Enforcement Officer, Recklessly Endangering Another Person, Possession of Firearm Prohibited, Possessing an Instrument of Crime, Burglary, Theft by Unlawful Taking, Receiving Stolen Property, Criminal Trespassing-Entering Structure, Criminal Trespassing-Simple Trespasser and Simple Assault with a Deadly Weapon. Root was arraigned today in front of Judge Leonard who set his bail at $1,000,000 cash. The preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday, September 3, 2020 at 1:30PM. Root was remanded to Montgomery County Correctional Facility. Although Sgt. Royds is off duty today, his handcuffs were used to transport Root to the Correctional Facility.
