On July 24, 2022, at approximately 0541 hours, Officers were dispatched to 2378 Philmont Avenue for a report of a physical domestic assault in progress. When officers arrived, they made contact with Rui Matos, the defendant, outside in front of the house. Matos was covered in sweat and looked unkempt. Matos was yelling at a female who was standing inside the house, who was identified as the homeowner and girlfriend of Matos.
Upon arrival at the scene, it was clear Matos was under the influence of a controlled substance. He had been up for five days, sweating, was unkempt and talking quickly and his story was not making sense. The female stated that Matos attempted to take her phone from her and shoved her against the wall. When the female was shoved against the wall, she was injured. The female showed officers bruises on her left forearm and right bicep. The bruises appeared new. She told officers that Matos had firearms inside the house.
Through investigation, Officers searched the house and found a Smith and Wesson AR pistol with two magazines. One magazine was inside the gun and the other was next to it. The magazine in the Smith and Wesson was loaded with .22 long rifle rounds. The female also gave me Matos' backpack to give to him. Matos gave officers consent to search his backpack. His bag contained a small glass container of marijuana and "Raw" brand rolling papers. Matos did not have a medical marijuana card in Pennsylvania. Further investigation revealed Matos was a person not to possess a firearm in Pennsylvania.
Matos was placed into custody. Upon searching his person, officers revealed a partially smoked marijuana blunt in his cigarette box. It was also discovered that Matos was charged by Bryn Athyn Police in 2021 for prohibited offensive weapons and possessing a firearm as a felon.
