On December 27, 2018 at approximately 7:43 PM, Hatfield Township Police Officers responded to the Wawa store located at 119 Bethlehem Pike in Hatfield Township, Montgomery County, for the report of a suspicious package left unattended outside of the store. Responding Officers located a large package wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper which was leaning up against a metal support pole near the entrance to the store.
In an abundance of caution, the store management and police elected to evacuate the store and cordon off the area in the interest of public safety until it could be determined whether or not the suspicious package posed any threat. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad was requested to assist with this incident. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad responded to the scene along with members of the Colmar Volunteer Fire Company, and Volunteer Medical Service Corps ambulance.
Members of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad assessed the suspicious package and were able to quickly determine it was not a threat to public safety and the all clear was given. Further investigation, determined it was a gift wrapped Christmas present consisting of a battery powered children’s toy set that had been inadvertently left behind by a customer who had been loading items into their vehicle earlier.
